Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln's election to the be the 16th president of the United States was one of the major causes of the civil war. Lincoln was from Illinois. During the Civil War, his goal was to reunite the nation. He was a major figure in the end of slavery by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. Six days after the surrender of the confederates, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

Jefferson Davis

This was the president of the Confederate states of America during the Civil War. He was the person in charge of war plans to defeat the Union. No foreign country actually ever recognized the Confederate states of America a separate country, and Davis's efforts failed.

Stephan Douglas

Douglas, along with Lincoln, was from Illinois. He designed the Kansas-Nebraska act and defeat Lincoln on a serious of debates in Illinois. He ran for president as the same time as Lincoln, but lost to his democratic nominee.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was an African-American abolitionist who escaped slavery. He went on and led many anti-slavery campaigns and writing books, proving that slaves were just as smart as american citizens. Douglass also supported rights of women, as he was the only African-American at the Seneca Falls Convention.

John Brown

Brown was a  white abolitionist who thought violence was the only way to end slavery. He a few battles and the raid on Harpers Ferry, where he was captures and hung for his actions.

George McClellan

McClellan was the general-in-chief of the Union army during the civil war. although he played an important role in training the army for battle, he was very meticulous when planning for war and this did not suit the fast moving pace of the Civil War.

Robert E. Lee

Lee graduated at the top of his class at the United States Military Academy and went on to have command of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Lee decided to go with his home state during the war despite the fact that Lincoln had offered him command of t he Union Army.

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson

Jackson was known to be one of the best generals in the confederate army after Lee. He also is considered to be one of the best tactical commanders. He did well in battles including the first and second battle of bull run, Antietam, and Fredricksburg.

P.G.T. Beauregard

He was a prominent general for the Confederate army and was born in Louisiana. He commanded battle such as the Siege of Corinth and the Battle of Shiloh.

William Tecumseh Sherman

Sherman was a general in the Union Army. He was under Ulysses Grant. He received praise for his tactics but was also criticized for his implememtaion of total war on the confederate army. He led Sherman's March which destroyed everything through its path in the southern regions.



Ulysses S. Grant



Grant was the commander of the Union Army during the Civil War. He also became the 18th president of the US after the war ended. He helped defeat Confederate Nationalism, the Ku Klux Klan, and protect African-American citizenship rights.




Thaddeus Stevens




Stevens was a radical republican that served in the house of representatives. He stood up for African-American rights and opposed President Andrew Johnson whenever he tried to suppress these rights during reconstruction.



Rutherford B. Hayes


Hayes was the 19th president of the united states. He oversaw the end of the reconstruction period and helped mend any last divisions between the north and the south.








John Wilkes Booth

"The Klan" is a group of people who believed in white-supremacy. They would treat African-Americans with violence and had no respect for them.
